Year 5
In Year 5 we have two classes both named after magnificent, native trees.
Rowan Class
Rowan trees have feathery leaves and their boughs become heavy with scarlet berries in Autumn. Rowan trees grow well at altitude and can be found high up in the hills of Yorkshire. In history, rowans were planted outside houses to prevent witches from entering the building.
Rowan class are taught by Miss Iqbal and supported by Miss Bartlett
Oak Class
The most English of trees, the magnificent oak is the largest of our native trees. It is home to more wildlife than any other native tree. Throughout history, it has been associated with pagan Gods, such as Zeus, Jupiter and the Celtic Dagda. Roman emperors were crowed in oak leaves.
Oak class are taught by Mr Adams and supported by Miss Gawthorp
The HLTA for Year 5 is Miss Birch
Year 5: Important Information
Reading & Homework
Reading
It is vitally important that your child reads at home as well as at school.
The expectations are that your child reads every day at home. In Year 5, Reading books can be handed in on any day to be changed, but they MUST be brought into school every day along with their reading records as staff will also be reading with school staff through the day. If possible, these books need to have been signed by an adult each time your child has read.
Homework
Children will be given a list of spellings to learn and a times table sheet to help them practice every Monday. These do not need to be returned to school. There will be a spelling and times table quiz on Friday.
PE Kit
Please make sure your child has the appropriate PE kit. This includes plain jogging bottoms or shorts, a green t-shirt, plain hoodie or long sleeved top and trainers or pumps. Remember that P.E lessons are done both indoors and outdoors, therefore suitable outdoor trainers will be required.
Canoeing
In Year 5, our children are given the opportunity to learn to canoe at Yeadon Tarn. All sessions are delivered by fully qualified staff at Yeadon Tarn, Sailing & Activity Centre.
Your childs teacher will let you know when these sessions are taking place.
Water
Please provide your child with a water bottle, so that they may stay hydrated through the day. Please ensure that you send only water in with your child and not juice or carbonated drinks.
